Dharan Welcomes 2012!

Dharan came to life on the evening of 31st December 2011 when a crowd of few hundred gathered at the Dharan Recreation Center for Open New Year's Eve Night Bash. The evening was headlined by popular singer Mausami Gurung where she belted out her popular hit's for the Chyangbas and Maichanng's. Accompanying her was Mega Model contestant Zunu Gurung who hosted the event whilst DJ Playa worked his magic. The event which was organised by The Inspire Dharan had a message which was 'Lets set off the message on climate change and for global warming'. There was even a short video on global warming shown on projection. Great initiative.

Happy New Year Dharan.

Bollywood Says Nepal Is India's Territory

Once again there's been a whole lot of cursing and uniting against India in the past couple of days and all it took was Bollywood movie trade analyst Komal Nahta to say ''Not to forget Nepal territory, because Nepal territory is also part of India'' while explaining the box office collection for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer DON 2. When I heard that, I felt uneasy as well. But then I wondered why a grown man, who surely is educated would say such a nothing. After fishing for clarifications Komal Nahta took to twitter and justified himself by saying that ''for film business purposes, the business of Nepal territory is, in fact, added to the business of India (NOT overseas, as you would believe).'' Fair enough, maybe he did have a point for saying that, but it's annoying now that the millions of geographically challenged Indian viewers will now think that Nepal is actually a territory of India (oh no).

Since we Nepali's tend to be sensitive about our boundaries, maybe it's time we stop hating on India and if we do care then we should press our own film industry leaders to reshape the system.

PS. The full clarification 'statement' by Komal Nahta is included in the jump below.
ALSO. I enjoyed DON 2 - it was soo UN-BOLLYWOOD, did you guys like it?

Quote Of The Day

''Since the time I joined the film fraternity, I don’t think there have been too many drastic changes in our movies till date.'' - Rajesh Hamal speaks to The Kathmandu Post ahead of the new year.
Very TRUE comment and I've huge respect for Rajesh Hamal (acted in 290 movies) but it's sad that he himself has done so many movies yet majority of them are too similar; again&again. The countless amount of times we've heard him shout 'HEYYYY'. An insightful interview, do have a read here.

Rajesh Hamal is one of the most popular Nepali actor.

Neon Party - The Photos

The Crowd
The much awaited NEON party by The Signaturee finally took place on the 21st December at The Coronet and a blast it certainly was! Attendees from near and far made it to the event which had several hundred people grooving to live music by the performers and not to forget the awesome beats by the DJ's. Enough of my words, see it to believe it. Photos and Videos courtesy of HAV A Moment

Priyanka Karky in Nepal

The beautiful former Miss Teen Nepal 2005 Priyanka Karky arrived in Nepal from the US few months ago. If you're not too familiar with the name then I'm sure you're familiar with the videos. She's in the music video of Timro Pachyauri... [amazing video] I don't think I need to say any more. Priyanka came to Nepal for the filming for Prasanna Poudel's Mero Best Friend after Jharana Bajracharya left the movie. Here's the stills of Priyanka from the upcoming issue of Vivacity magazine. Loving the themed shoot.

No Rhino's Poached This Year

Conservationists and animal lovers can rejoice after news that not a single rhino has been poached this past year in Nepal. During the moaist conflict there was a brief period where many rhinos were being poached in Chitwan National Park thank's to the lack of security posts. Tourists also claimed to have seen rhinos being poached during their elephant safari in Bardia National Park, from that time period  approximately 15 were poached (2059/60) but thankfully the numbers have been going down since then. Last year only 2 rhinos were poached.

So why the decline? The public have been more informed regarding the endangered animals and more police posts are visible in the national parks.

Current Rhino Population
Chitwan National Park - 503
Bardia National Park - 24
Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve - 7

Mero Koseli - Lex in Nepal

This is the final wepisode from 'Lex in Nepal', this is 'Mero Koseli'.

Though it's the shortest video out of the whole series, I hope you still like it. I don't know whether I am relieved or sad but this short journey has been very good and you know, we're not professional nor have we claimed to be so we have made several mistakes along the way which only we know... however I am glad that the majority of you have been supportive throughout. If I was to do something like this again then planning is something I would give my time to. Nonetheless I am very happy proud to have delivered this from my two-month long holiday to Nepal.

Merry Christmas.

Tweet For Cause : Mission 5

tfcNepal's mission 5 took place on the 17th December 2011 to support a visually-impaired center; Samyukta Distribihin Shrot Kachhya in Belahi of Udayapur. It was the first to be organised outside of Kathmandu therefore the number of tfc'ians present wasn't too much but enough to make things happen. Those that contribute to @tfcNepal can feel good for their deeds as their generosity has gifted a smile on the faces of these children and young adults. Musical instruments such as a hamonium and madal were gifted so they continue to exercise their creativity as well as many clothes being distributed to keep them warm through this winter period.

Below is a touching video of the welcome which the tfc'ians received at the center.

Yak Attack

Now we've seen and heard bands in dozen that basically are very similar to each other but here's Yak Attack, a  London-based band fairly low-key who's musical outfit is built around a core of Afro-Asian rhythms. The band's latest offering 'Taal Sutra EP' is now available to buy online and the track Hariyo Dada Mathi featuring popular Nepali singer Raju Lama is already impressing the listeners.

1500+ Leave For India Everyday

Thanks to our free-border over 1500 Nepalis leave for our neighboring country India in a bid to escape poverty and unemployment. This figure is only from the Nepalgunj entry point. The photo above is the entry point to India from the Sunauli border, furthermore there are several other entry points along the Terai belt which means the figure for Nepali's leaving to find seasonal/annual jobs in India could well be very high. The Nepalgunj exit point is mostly used by villagers from the poverty stricken Karnali region who normally go to Indian cities such as Shimla, Dehradun and Mumbai.

As I write this, it makes me feel guilty that even some of us educated one's live comfortably abroad when we know we could atleast try to build opportunities back home. Hmm.

FINAL Lex in Nepal Video on Christmas Day!

So we are five video's down and on the last one which is Mero Koseli. The main point which I want to share with everyone reading and those that are waiting for the final video is... it's only 1 Minute 20 Seconds* long. Please do not expect a very long video, it's extremely short and sweet and I hope it leaves you with a smile on your face.

And I guess that will be my Christmas Present for everyone :))

I'm happy to know that so many have watched the Lex in Nepal videos. Positive and negative comments have come through which is great as the feedback will be a guidance for me and the team to improve in the days to come. Lex in Nepal would not have been possible without the talent powerhouses I'm working with; thank's to youtube for uniting us and also our biggest supporters Khukuri Beer, Nepalese Tandoori, London Fashion House and Asian Mahila Association.

I hope you enjoy the Christmas Special and have a good winter time :)

Chapali Height - Sexy Nepali Movie

Binita Baral may have been left embarrassed after producer Krisha Chaulagain removed her from what was set to be her debut movie but now it look's like things could not have been any better for the petite actress as she is set to start the promotional campaign for her first movie CHAPALI HEIGHT. An odd name you must be thinking, well this height will have love, romance and also give you some thrills. If the word going around the movie circuit is true then there's even a threesome scene in the film. Bold, dare I say! The film has already brought the actress in a controversy again after digitally altered photo's were published in mainstream media that led everyone to believe she had appeared topless. Binita quickly reacted to that by holding an impromptu press conference and presenting the original images to the media.

The movie which also stars Raj Ghimire and Amir Gautam has been directed by Dipendra K Khanal and is based on a story of a girl (Binita) living in a hotel where two guys have fallen head over heels in love with her. Sources confirm that there are plenty of 'sexy' scenes in the movie and go as far as saying this could very well be a Nepali 'Murder' however it is yet to be seen if the Nepali Censor Board will actually accept all these 'sexy' scenes.

Watch Out For It. Chapali Height is coming soon.

Gay Pride Nepal - Lex in Nepal

Presenting to you, the fifth installment from Lex in Nepal - Gay Pride Nepal. A video that covers the second Gay Pride parade that took place on the 14th August 2011 in Narayangadh in Nepal. I certainly hope you watch the video. This was actually the first video that we filmed from the series of six therefore I would like to apologise beforehand for the crappy audio. I hope you like the intro animation.

And you know, talking about Gays, Transgenders, HIV and AIDS probably isn't cool or as fun as watching this or that but this is what I choose to show, be it a destination that hasn't been promoted well (Janakpur) or subjects that people are still wanting to avoid. If you can watch it then do so, if this simply isn't what you wish to see then I'm not forcing you to view it.

19/12/2011 - Im enjoying reading the contrasting opinions regarding this matter and the encouraging feedback. Here's one opinion which was a must share:

‎''Being Lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or Transgender is a part of someone's identity. What's wrong if one man is emotionally, physically, spiritually and sexually attracted to another man? what's wrong if one woman choose to have sex and live her entire life with another woman? Why should one give a shit if his or her gender identity does not match the social expectation for the physical sex they were born with? Being born in a "Hindu Priest' family and grown up in a cultural society I still carry all those Values and ethics taught by my parents and elders and will be carrying forever. But there is something vital than religion, more important than culture or tradition, more natural than social norms and values i.e, 'human equality and social justice.'' But homosexuality is yet to be considered as obvious and natural in our society and shame on those so-called educated and civilised youth activists who often chant the slogan of equality and diversity but shut their mouth when its time to raise awareness and advocate for 'Same sex marriage' . Nevertheless, I can see the hight of hope emerging from somewhere and I am proud of it. This is a video by Lex in Nepal- Gay Pride Nepal that covers the second Gay Pride took place on the 14th August 2011 in Narayangadh(Nepal). Would like to request all of you to watch this and if possible do share. Finger crossed 'Same sex marriage will get place in our new Constitution' ... 'HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT CRIME, HOMOPHOBIA IS'. - Surya Prakash Bhatta

Village Benefits From Wind-Solar Power System

Ramro Khabar.
Villagers of Dhaubadi in Nawalparasi are set to benefit from Asian Development Bank's newest pilot project that is happening for the first time in Nepal which is the installation of the mini wind-solar hybrid power system. Under the system there are two sets of 5 kW wind turbines complemented by a 2 kW peak solar photo-voltaic panel to meet the village's daily demand of 43.6 kW hours.

The positive outcome for the villagers mean that they can spend less time in their search for firewood and the reduction in deforestation in the area. This sure is an example of the foreign aid money being used and bringing the change that is expected. Let's hope ADB's project reaches many more rural villages in the days to come.

Jiwan Kale by Dipesh Gurung

‘He was puffing on a Khukuri Churot (Cigarettet), really coarse, rough and strong… A little like Jiwan Kale. That’s his name in the village. I wonder if anyone even knows his surname or ever bothered asking… Or if in his entire life he has been referred to as “Mr. Kale”. I doubt that’s his surname and like all others, I failed to ask him it myself.
It was a hot monsoon day in Juimurei, a gateway to many other hillside villages in Pokhara. I approached Jiwan Kale and asked if I could take a picture of him. He tugged sharply on his old purple shirt, shifted his hat slightly and made sure the knot on the small scarf was still done up and said “I better look good for your big camera” and gave the most genuine and loving smile one could ask for. I showed him the picture on my camera and he was very pleased with the result.
When I got home later and looked at the picture again and its details, I couldn’t help but notice his teeth that were rotting away and his gray facial hair. I bet Jiwan has a story he could tell to account for every one of his deep wrinkles. Over years of working on the foothills he has acquired a dark complexion hence the name Kale I suppose. People have even asked me where in Africa the picture was taken (as that is where I grew up) and are often surprised when I tell them this was in Nepal, very close to my village Rijain aka Ranjen. I look forward to going back to Nepal next year and taking pictures not of, but with Jiwan Kale and possibly help him out on the farm where he spends his days labouring away for the “Sau Ji”.’

Deepak Ghimire's Lagchha Malai Video!

Aichhh!!!

Aainch Produxon are surely upping their game. Here come's their latest music video for the song Lagchha Malai by Deepak Ghimire. The music video has been directed by Rozan Shrestha and the video features several actors. Do check it out... though the music is nice yet it personally doesn't appeal to me but I enjoyed how the video was made and the running story-line being showcased.

Aainch Produxon was previously mentioned on lexlimbu.com for their video: Good Cause II

Snow Flowers - Upcoming Nepali Movie

There's a movie which is currently in it's post-production stage that will most probably release  only in 2012 and it's called Snow Flowers. Before you think this is another foreign made Nepali movie then let me clear your questions, the movie has been directed by Subarna Thapa and the heroes of the movie are Diya Maskey and Nisha Adhikari. This movie is simple. A simple love story between two women. Director Thapa is not out to make a 'gay movie', but he's just creating a cinema that portrays the 'love' that blossoms between two individuals.

Also Stars
Laxmi Giri
Nisha Sharma
Saugat Malla
Sunil Babu Pant (CA Member)

This is also the movie for which actress Nisha Adhikari chopped her hair off. Also Snow Flowers has been extensively covered by few Nepali media as well as international press. Here are the relevant links with more deets! Republica! Hufftington Post! API Blog! Kathmandu Post!

PS. The fifth video from Lex in Nepal is Gay Pride Nepal 2011 which will be uploaded this Sunday at 8PM on youtube! Poster is below, don't forget to watch it :D

Looks like 2012 set's out to be a banging year for Nepali Cinema - Loot, Goodbye Kathmandu, Shayad, Snow Flowers - WHAT ELSE?

Sanjeev Kapoor's THE YELLOW CHILLI in Kathmandu

There's a new eatery in Kathmandu and it goes by the name 'The Yellow Chilli'; a very popular restaurant chain from India that has opened it's first branch at the Bluebird Complex. The restaurant offers tongue sizzling Indian food and local dishes in a signature Sanjeev Kapoor style! If you aren't aware of him already then Sanjeev Kapoor is an Indian chef turned celebrity who has his own show 'Khana Kazana'. The show is one of the longest running in Asia and in 2010 had more than 500 million viewers. Eight well trained chefs have been brought from India to maintain Kapoor's recipe and the quality of the food being served at the joint.

Let me know if it Lexcites your taste buds?

Spanish Film - Katmandu Un Espejo En El Cielo

I've spelled Kathmandu as it has been spelled on the trailer for Katmandu, this is an upcoming Spanish film which is set to release on the 3rd of February 2012. The movie has been directed by Iciar Bollain and stars Veronica Echegui who plays Vicky Sherpa. The movie is believed to be based on the early years lived by a Catalan teacher in Kathmandu and her journey facing bleak educational landscape, extreme poverty to falling in love with a stranger. Kathmandu and Mustang were the few filming locations out of the many.

I can't comment too much on the synopsis as I myself am not too clear, however do enjoy the trailer. It surely look's very interesting. According to IMDB the movie has been made in a budget of 4.5 Million Euros.

Today's Facebook Status

Just read. You don't have to agree with it.

''Im fine with people being very uncomfortable with the whole issue of the existence of gay people and that does not offend me nor do I care about your views however I have to say that I am deeply saddened by comments such as ''all you gay lezzo out there think about AIDS.....lol'', that is very inaccurate. Many relate homosexuality as a sin due to religious reasons but before you talk big go read the histories of the Greek and many ancient cultures where this practice was silently accepted. In the West it is perceived that HIV stems out of homosexuality but much of the transmission that occurs in Africa and Asia are because of UNPROTECTED sexual contact between a MAN and a WOMAN. And you might be wondering why I know this, and before you ask, I DONT HAVE AIDS. I know this because I completed an essay today on WHY SEXUALITY is important for development geographers. If what I discuss on my blog and my videos is something which you cannot digest. Please feel free to remove yourself from my facebook. Thank you.'' - lexlimbu
